AI Networks of Excellence (ICT-48)

The ICT-48 projects aim to build the European Network of Excellence of research centres in AI, with support from the VISION project.

Together these projects will strengthen the research and training of AI made in Europe.

Find out more about the projects:

VISION - Value and impact through synergy, interaction and cooperation of Networks of AI Excellence Centres

Start date: 1 September 2020

End date: 31 August 2023

Scope:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of strategic importance and a key driver of economic development, bringing solutions to many societal challenges ranging from treating diseases to minimising the environmental impact of farming. The EU is focussing on connecting and strengthening AI research centres across Europe and supporting the development of AI applications in key sectors.

Main objective:

To ensure Europe stays at the forefront of AI developments, the EU-funded VISION project will build on Europe’s world-class community of researchers. The project will also build on the success and organisation of CLAIRE (the Confederation of Laboratories for AI Research in Europe) as well as of AI4EU, which was established to set up the first European Artificial Intelligence On-Demand Platform and Ecosystem.

AI4Media - A European Excellence Centre for Media, Society and Democracy

Start date: 1 September 2020

End date: 31 August 2024

Scope:

Motivated by the challenges, risks and opportunities that the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought to the media, society and politics, the EU-funded AI4Media project aspires to establish a centre of excellence and a wide network of researchers across Europe and beyond.

Main objective:

The project will focus on delivering the next generation of core AI advances to serve the key sector of media, making sure that European values surrounding ethical and trustworthy AI are embedded in future AI deployments.

The project will be supplemented by a funding framework, a PhD programme and a set of use cases to demonstrate the impact of the actions taken on the media sector.

ELISE - European Learning and Intelligent Systems Excellence

Start date: 1 September 2020

End date: 31 August 2023

Scope:

As the application of artificial intelligence (AI) is spreading worldwide, Europe is trying to increase its competitiveness in the new technology. Innovative European researchers in machine learning (ML) and AI have been working together to improve research collaborations and engage industry and society.

Main objective:

The EU-funded ELISE project aims to increase Europe’s competitiveness in ML and AI through a network of excellence. It will run a PhD and a postdoc programme to attract world-class talents to Europe. Moreover, it will operate a Fellows programme for ground-breaking research and organise high-profile workshops to develop AI application methods further. Industry involvement is guaranteed by the many connections of the ELISE members.

HumanE AI Network - Making artificial intelligence human-centric

Start date: 1 September 2020

End date: 31 August 2023

Scope:

The HumanE AI Net brings together top European research centers, universities and key industrial champions into a network of centers of excellence that goes beyond a narrow definition of AI and combines world-leading AI competence with key players in related areas such as HCI, cognitive science, social sciences and complexity science. This is crucial to develop a truly Human Centric brand of European AI.

Main objective:

The project will leverage the synergies between the involved centers of excellence to develop the scientific foundations and technological breakthroughs needed to shape the AI revolution in a direction that is beneficial to humans both individually and societally, and adheres to European ethical values and social, cultural, legal, and political norms.

The core challenge is the development of robust, trustworthy AI capable of what could be described as “understanding” humans, adapting to complex real-world environments, and appropriately interacting in complex social settings.

The aim is to facilitate AI systems that enhance human capabilities and empower individuals and society as a whole while respecting human autonomy and self-determination.

TAILOR - Foundations of Trustworthy AI - Integrating Reasoning, Learning and Optimisation

Start date: 1 September 2020

End date: 31 August 2023

Scope:

Maximising opportunities and minimising risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) requires a focus on human-centred trustworthy AI. This can be achieved by collaborations between research excellence centres with a technical focus on combining expertise in theareas of learning, optimisation and reasoning. Currently, this work is carried out by an isolated scientific community where research groups are working individually or in smaller networks.

Main objective:

The EU-funded TAILOR project aims to bring these groups together in a single scientific network on the Foundations of Trustworthy AI, thereby reducing the fragmentation and increasing the joint AI research capacity of Europe, helping it to take the lead and advance the state-of-the-art in trustworthy AI. The four main instruments are a strategic roadmap, a basic research programme to address grand challenges, a connectivity fund for active dissemination, and network collaboration activities.
